About This Artwork

I took this photo while on a road trip to Artsakh in 2003. I remember feeling the haunting echo of the war from a decade earlier still resonating in the landscape and the people. We happened upon this trio of Armenian boys swimming at a community pool while on our way to Shushi. *This work is being donated in honor of the memory of Neery Melkonian, a contemporary art curator, writer and champion for Armenian artists. She created NK Arts, a non-profit organization founded in1999 to introduce the rich culture of Nagorno-Karabagh (Artsakh) to the world.

  • About Aram Jibilian

Aram Jibilian discovered photography during his first trip to Armenia in 1994. Inspired by the dynamic nature of the landscape and feeling a genuine connection to the people, he used photography to tell the story of his relationship to his homeland. He moved to New York from his native California in 1998 to pursue a Master of Arts at New York University, where his work always maintained a strong connection to the story of Armenia. In 2008, Jibilian began an “inter-and intra-psychic” exploration of the work of the late artist, Arshile Gorky. Based on the artists’ shared ancestry, Jibilian began to consider the psychic traces of loss and how they function within the individual and the Diaspora as a whole. Jibilian participated in "Armenity", which was awarded with the Golden Lion for the best national participation at the 2015 Venice Biennale. In 2014, Jibilian completed a Masters in Social Work, and currently works as a psychotherapist within the LGBTQ community in New York City.
