About this artwork
This photograph was taken during a road trip to Artsakh in 2003. I remember feeling the haunting echo of the war from a decade earlier still resonating in the landscape and the people. We happened upon this group of Armenian boys play-fighting outside the famous metal church in Shushi, which functioned as an arsenal during the war in the 1990s.
*This work is being donated in honor of the memory of Neery Melkonian, a contemporary art curator, writer and champion for Armenian artists. She created NK Arts, a non-profit organization founded in 1999 to introduce the rich culture of Nagorno-Karabagh (Artsakh) to the world.
