About Roya Farassat
Roya Farassat was born in Tehran, Iran and moved to New York in 1978 prior to the Islamic revolution. She received a BFA in 1986 from Parsons School of Design and in 2001 began welding and making sculptures at the Sculpture Center.
Roya’s career spans over thirty years, making art that investigates existential themes of loss and the complexities of identity in a world that she finds absurd and wants to question socially and politically.
In 2006, Farassat was awarded a sculpture workspace residency from Henry Street Settlement and the Makor/Steinhardt Center Artist Residence Program. In 2009 she was nominated for Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize in London and the Jameel Art Prize at the Victoria & Albert Museum in 2012.
Farassat’s work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries, museums, universities and art fairs in United States and abroad at Dubai Art Fair and Jamm Auction in Kuwait. Her work has been reviewed in The Financial Times, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Hyper Allergic, The Brooklyn Rail, Art Radar, Art Critical, The W Magazine, Independent Persian, Iran Times, and Flaunt Magazine along with TV interviews from Persian BBC and Manoto Plus.
