Abdullah Murad, Exercises in Abstraction
Exercises in Abstraction
Born in Homs, Syria, Abdullah Murad is considered as one of the pioneers of Arab Abstract Expressionism. A passionate painter, his works creatively mix media textures alternating layers ranging from a tactile quality to naturally scattered voids. His vibrant colours give a sense of movement attenuated by softer almost muted hues. With energetic brushstrokes, he applies lines, shapes and lets stains fall onto the surface in what he refers to as a game of attraction and repulsion between the elements. He fills the space with arabesques, fauvist colours and an overall abstract composition that seems to surpass the limits of the canvas.
