About Fateh Moudarres
Born in Aleppo, Fateh Al Moudarres (1922 - 1999) was a highly influential artist who became known as a pioneer of modernism across the region and a font of knowledge for other artists in his native Syria.
Al Moudarres graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and also furthered his studies in Paris. His figurative work is characteristically poignant and reflective, the emotion palpable in the hallmark wide-shaped faces of his subjects, even though their features are only just discernible.
His work was the subject of several solo exhibitions worldwide and he participated in a large number of group shows, including the Cairo and Sao Paulo Biennales. A well-known writer and renowned professor, he taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University.
