About Nayla Romanos Iliya
Nayla Romanos Iliya is a Lebanese Architect and Sculptor. She graduated from the American University of Beirut with a Bachelor degree of Architecture in 1984. She did numerous interior design, renovation, and architectural projects in Lebanon. Since 2011, she has been sculpting on a full time basis. She currently lives and works in Beirut. In search for identity, Romanos Iliya took interest in the Phoenician civilization, and more particularly its greatest achievement: the Phoenician Alphabet. She was inspired by the Phoenician letters, and created the Phoenician Alphabet series, which are sculptures influenced by the letter’s shapes, meanings, and powerful symbolism. Displayed individually or dialoguing with each other, they are often fixed on a mirrored steel base that is part of the sculpture, the reflective base symbolizing the sea. Giving a new life to those archaic symbols, using them to express herself, convey a message or tell stories makes her feel closer to her roots, reconciling the present whilst paying tribute to the past. Her work can be found in private collections, mainly in Lebanon, France and the UAE.
