About Nairy Shahinian
Heavily influenced by her family profession, Syrian-Armenian artist Nairy Shahinian states: “My late father was one of the best professional photographers in the region and his career and photographic equipment fascinated me since I was a child.”
Born in Damascus, Nairy Shahinian (1984) trained at an early age in photography with her father and later received her Professional Photography Diploma from the New York Institute of Photography. As her father’s assistant, she worked with him on many projects, including a lengthy documentation of major Syrian historical sites. Shahinian’s artistic practice approaches contemporary photography as a never-ending process of discovery, employing experimental techniques as investigative tools, allowing her to intimately document her immediate surroundings and experiences.
Nairy Shahinian has participated in exhibitions throughout the Arab world, Europe, and the US at such venues as the World Art Dubai fair; The Creative Center at MTC, United States; Art Sawa, UAE; International Fair for Contemporary Artists, Switzerland; Galerie Oberkampf, France; the French Cultural Centre, Syria; the British Council, Syria and the Goethe Institute, Syria.
