About This Artwork
This series is inspired by the poetry of the well known Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish (d. 2008). Verses of his poetry compliment the drawings. Darwish was an iconic figure and inspired many artists to create paintings and artists’ books.
The verses is this drawing are from 'That is her image and This is the suicide of the lover'.
“The land begins from his hands, from the fabric of the wound
And from the ululations of the white villages,
I look like it, while walking on the piercing end of the spear
It looks like me, while walking in the flame of the wheat,
Where does his land begin from? From his occupied body…
This is my new fire, and the metal of dreams
Have they returned to Jaffa which has not gone away?
I will go with my blood extended over the sea…”
