Galila Nawar was born in Cairo to a family of filmmakers. After graduating with a BA in Psychology from AUC in 1985, she went on to study drawing and painting at the Magd El Sigini studio and then oil painting and portraiture at Central St. Martins. Nawar’s work closely examines portraiture and the often intricate facets of identity that it encompasses. Choosing to paint from selected photographs, simple details, postures or glances are used as the foundation to construct emotionally charged narratives.
