Follow ArtistBorn in Damascus, Nazir Nabaa was an award-winning Syrian artist who studied first in Egypt, graduating from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Cairo, and later in Paris, where he gained a second degree from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.
His art encompasses a wide range of subject matter, spanning figurative work depicting Arab women in traditional dress to still lifes and posters relaying political messages. Nabaa’s work is characterized by precision and detailing, while a palette of warm, vibrant colors and dynamic textures used in backdrops and the clothing of his subjects evokes the rich heritage of his homeland. In later years, he began introducing political themes into his work, spurred on by the conflicts that engulfed the region.
