Early Life and Artistic Journey
Mohammed Mourabiti (b. 1968) is a self-taught Moroccan artist who was born in Marrakech. Although his talent was evident early on in life when he began drawing as a child, Mourabiti worked for several years in industry before devoting himself to art, taking jobs that allowed him to develop his practice over time.
A Multidisciplinary Approach: Collage, Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture
Mourabiti is a multi-media artist whose oeuvre spans collage, drawing, painting and sculpture, he is today regarded as a major figure on the contemporary Moroccan art scene and known globally.
Cultural Influences: Moroccan Heritage and Environmental Themes
Mourabiti’s work is rooted in his birth country’s rich heritage and cultural traditions, while also revealing his passion for the earth and environment, alongside spiritual influences.
“Keeping in touch with the earth is a vital need. It nourishes the body and the mind,” he has said.
Blending Tradition and Modernity in Art
Mourabiti blends traditional techniques, including Arabic calligraphy and Islamic, geometric patterns and shapes, with contemporary abstract forms, in works that are completed in vibrant colours and mixed media.

Al Maqam: Fostering Artistic Exchange and Creativity
Mourabiti completed an artist’s residence at the Paris Cité des Arts in 2007. He founded Al Maqam in Tahannaout in 2008, an arts hub which holds festivals and exhibitions, houses his studio and provides a platform for cultural exchange among artists.
