Educational Journey: From Sound Recording to Prestigious Degrees
Maroun Chaccour (b. 1977) is a multi-disciplinary Lebanese artist who is also a respected musician and art dealer. He studied Sound Recording and Music Technology in London and gained a Master’s degree from the Oxford, Cambridge and Royal Society of Arts examination board in 2004.
Early Influences: Antique Restoration and Patina Techniques
In his teen years, Chaccour worked with his family in antique restoration, specifically in the area of ‘patina’, which would later inspire and influence his artistic practice.
“I loved being involved in the work, it was incredibly detailed and intrinsic,” he said in an interview with Artscoops. “Restoration introduced me to patina – I found I absolutely loved working with wood, especially using gold and silver leaf on collectibles in need of some attention.”
Transition from Sound Engineering to Visual Art
Having returned to Lebanon, he worked as a sound engineer, but in time, found himself drawn once again to painting and experimenting with the ‘patina’ techniques he’d gained experience of in earlier years, this time transferring them to canvas, using acrylic, and for his own personal creativity.
Artistic Techniques: Pointillism and Geometric Forms
In many of his artworks, Chaccour makes use of pointillism, using tiny dabs of paint in a diverse palette to create a composition that gives the impression to audiences of looking down on a scene from a bird’s-eye view. Other pieces reveal a leaning towards large-scale geometric forms and a diverse variety of motifs that range from birds to Venetian masks.
Key Exhibitions: Solo Shows and Group Contributions
Chaccour’s work featured in a solo show, titled ‘Lines of Thoughts’ at 392RMEIL393 Gallery, Beirut in 2018, which featured 30 of his paintings. He has also taken part in several group exhibitions, including the ‘Art Li Beirut’ online auction for the Revive Mar Mikhael non-profit initiative (2020).
Chaccour’s Atelier in Beirut: A Hub for Creativity and Collaboration
Today, he works out of his own atelier in Beirut, which plays several other roles, including that of gallery for exhibitions, a meeting place for collectors and artists, and home to his collection of art, vintage sound systems and vinyl, amassed over the years.
Global Reach: Chaccour's Art in International Collections
Chaccour’s paintings have been sold in Lebanon, Switzerland, England and New York. He is also a respected photographer.
