Follow ArtistFares Cachoux (b. 1976): Syrian Digital Artist and Activist
Fares Cachoux is a Syrian artist who was born in Homs in 1976. He studied Computer Engineering at the University of Aleppo, before travelling to Paris where he obtained a Master’s and PhD in Digital Art and Visual Communication at the Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée.
Transition From Computer Engineering to Digital Art
For several years, Cachoux worked in the media and taught digital art in the Gulf. In recent years, he was based in Doha, Qatar, where he was responsible for the digital departments of several of the country’s museums, before taking the decision in 2021 to focus fully on his art, relocating to Paris to do so.
Themes of Activism: Stark Graphics and Bold Messaging
Cachoux’s art has activism at its core, taking the form of posters with simple, stark graphics and direct messaging. He asks searching questions on a broad range of political, social and environmental issues in works that are minimalistic, yet bold, completed in striking colours. Sometimes subtle and at other times direct, the themes explored range from women’s rights and discrimination to the repercussions of regional conflict, with a pop-art approach often adding an intriguing element of incongruity.
Cachoux’s figures are given a hallmark simple silhouette, which serves to strengthen their presence in the composition and his messages. “I always hope that the simplicity of the graphic style helps the viewer to link the image to the parallel real-life event,” he has said.
His works are printed using state-of-the-art digigraphic technology, with each print forming part of a limited edition, numbered and bearing the artist’s signature and the printer’s stamp, along with a certificate of authenticity.
Notable Projects and Public Collections
Cachoux’s works can be found in high-profile private and public collections in Europe, the US and the Middle East. His art has been shown in a number of solo exhibitions, including, most recently: ‘Figures Contemporaines’, L’Institut du Monde Arabe, Tourcoing, France (2024); ‘Eye to Eye’, Jacques Leegenhoek Gallery, Paris (2023); and ‘Profils Amers’, Gallerie Europia, Paris (2015).
International Exhibitions and Publications
He has also taken part in group shows, including Banksy’s high-profile, satirical pop-up art show ‘Dismaland’, held in Weston-super-Mare, UK (2015).
