Educational Foundation in Fine Arts
Abdessamad Bouysramne (b. 1995) is a Moroccan multi-disciplinary visual artist who was born in Marrakech. He studied in Casablanca, gaining his degree from the city’s Higher School of Fine Arts.
Exploring Media: From Calligraphy to Video Art
Bouysramne works across a range of media that includes painting, photography, installation and video, often incorporating calligraphy into his pieces. He has become known for his use of bright, bold monochrome pigmentation, alongside other individual, contemporary means of expression.
Themes and Inspirations: Time, Myth, and Morality
Archaeological spaces are a hallmark of Bouysramne’s compositions, spanning and bridging geographical locations and civilisations across the millennia and the cosmos, which sometimes inevitably give his pieces a mythical feel.
Alongside the process of time, themes explored range from humanity’s perpetual advancements, and the way they shape and influence the thoughts and actions of future generations, to the ongoing battle between good and evil.
Bouysramne’s artistic passion also extends to the written word as a source of analysis and inspiration. He draws on a diverse range of artefacts that play a part in documenting and defining history, whether taking the form of paper or even leather and ancient rocks featuring etchings and carvings of significance.
Landmark buildings of historical and architectural importance are also drawn upon.
Bouysramne’s Contemporary Approaches to Historical Narratives
Commenting on his approach and work, Bouysramne has said: “If the approach of contemporary art is to de-define art itself, I work on shaking up the meaning of painting itself. I am neither abstract nor figurative; my work is situated at the limits of the in-between. I try to do away with any prior distinction or definition of painting and the work of art. I produce images through writing, and I paint quasi-figurative scenes through writing, which dialogue with the viewer’s mind and are open to all kinds of interpretations. Every art production is an archaeological process, and every work of art is an archaeological product in its present.”
Recent Works and Installations
Bouysramne has taken part in a number of solo and group art exhibitions and events such as art fairs in Morocco and abroad. Most recently, these include ‘Whispers of Silence’, an installation and live show by Kalimat, held at Gallery #2 Boulevard Crescent, Dubai, and ‘Tumult’ (Turmoil), Artem Gallery, Casablanca (2021). His work is found in public and private collections.
