Mohammed Boustane
Born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1960, Mohammed Boustane is a visual artist celebrated for his calligraphic artworks mostly created on paper, cedar and skin. In 1991, he decided to quit his job and to focus solely on his art, and in 1998, he moved to Marrakech to develop his experience in calligraphy. In 2010, he won the prize of the International Festival of Calligraphy in Algeria, and in 2012 the prize of the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial in the UAE. He was also awarded in 2015, from the Musée de la Palmeraie, Art Contemporain et Nature, the Gift of Morocco. Boustane’s letters emit the Moroccan cultural identity through them. The shape of the letters are altered in a way to make them seem effortless and beautiful. Boustane’s calligraphy is a geometric depiction of abstract objects.
