Haleh Anvari
Follow ArtistBorn in Tehran in 1962, writer, photographer and activist-artist Haleh Anvari studied in the UK earning her B.A in Joint Honours Politics and Philosophy from the University of Keele, Staffordshire. In the early 1990s, she returned to Tehran where she currently lives and works.
The hijab became mandatory after the 1979 revolution in Iran under the Islamic Republic. Her photos of colourful chadors are her attempt to question the black chador as the icon of Iran and her way to challenge stereotypes attributed to Iranian women. Her unconventional art has been referred to as “Neo-Orientalism” and has rightfully surpassed frontiers.
