Yumna Al-Arashi
Follow ArtistBorn to a Yemeni father and an Egyptian mother, Yumna Al-Arashi was raised in the United States. She studied International Politics at The New School in New York City. Her on-going photography work has received support from The US Department of State Office of Art in Embassies, International Women’s Media Foundation, The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, National Geographic Abu Dhabi, and VSCO. In 2011, Forbes Magazine named her an Up and Coming Female Journalist. Al-Arashi’s second and latest film shot in Oman and entitled The 99 Names of God, was featured in the Tribeca Film Festival of 2018. Her work challenges her own struggles of identity and position in the social realm as both a woman and a Muslim. With a background in politics and journalism, Al-Arashi approaches humanitarian matters in her art such as women’s rights and labour injustices.
