Lea Skayem
Follow ArtistAn Introduction to Léa Skayem:
Léa Skayem is a young Lebanese photographer, filmmaker and cinematographer who was born in 1997 in Beirut. She studied at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (ALBA), graduating with a Master’s in Cinema Directing.
As part of her approach, Skayem utilises aesthetic research and experimentation, creating documentary films and photographs using what reality has to offer as her go-to subject matter in her compositions.
The Primary Themes In Léa Skayem’s Work:
Léa Skayem is known, in particular, for her experimental ‘Untitled’ series of staged black and white nude self-portraits in which she explores the relationship between body and space. In these thought-provoking photos, Skayem shares an explicit adaptation of self-perception, while handing audiences an active role, rather than the part of passive spectator. This approach aligns with Skayem’s broader practice of inviting viewers to share her life experiences through her eyes and with the camera.
The conflicts that female sexuality and gender-related issues present and the challenges of occupying a woman’s body in a conservative society are themes that lie at the heart of Skayem’s work; the camera captures her at intimate points in time, generating a conflicted feeling among viewers, perhaps, that they have interrupted a moment of privacy, but have simultaneously been invited to share in it. In this way, Skayem adopts a vulnerable position, seemingly unprotected from attack and adversity, yet also confidently using her art to share powerful, relevant messages. “For me, the camera has been the substitute of a man for a long time. Facing the camera only, I could truly be myself,” she has said.
Léa Skayem’s Achivements:
Léa Skayem was one of seven artists chosen from hundreds of applicants to have their work featured on the Beirut Art Fair’s social media platforms in 2020, following an open call in an initiative launched to support the Lebanese artistic sector, and emerging talents, in particular. Her work has also featured in digital collective shows organised by the Arneli Art Gallery in Beirut.
Léa Skayem’s Passion for Storytelling:
Skayem has spoken publicly about her deep passion for the art of storytelling and, as a professional, her satisfaction at contributing to the creation of compelling movies, series and advertisements.
